Common Vision Problems And How To Correct Them

Most common vision problems are related to refraction errors in the eye. When light passes into the eye through the cornea and lens, it is bent or refracted and focused on the retina. If the light is not focused correctly, vision problems will occur.

Nearsightedness is also referred to as myopia. Distant objects will appear blurred and out of focus. Near vision may continue to be clear. This happens when light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, occurs when light is focused behind the retina. Nearby objects will appear blurry but distant objects are seen clearly.Additional information can be found at http://www.everydayhealth.com/vision-center/the-eye-exam/nearsighted-farsighted.aspx.

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea of the eye is not round. Vision will be blurry and possibly distorted. It may be mild or severe.

All three conditions can be corrected with laser surgery or with glasses or contacts.

Presbyopia begins for most people in their forties. Many people first notice it when they start holding books or newspapers at arm’s length in order to read them. Some people choose to use reading glasses. Other options include bifocal glasses or contacts. Laser surgery and lens implants are also options.

See your eye professional to discuss your options.
